SEEN ON:

What does PHREEDOM mean?

Phreedom is a playful twist on the words “freedom” and “phone.” It stands for “Freedom from the smartPhone [and all other wireless mobile devices (WMDs)].” But don’t get us wrong—our mission isn’t to give up our smartphones completely. Instead, it’s about finding freedom by using our devices more mindfully, so they enhance our lives without taking over.

PHREEDOM FOUNDATION: UNGRIP DEVICES. GRIP LIFE

Phreedom Foundation is an educational initiative led by Dr. Nidhi Gupta.

Our Goals

We're not anti-technology, we're pro-balance.

Our goal is to educate and inspire individuals to regain control over their time and attention, allowing them to discover the joys of life beyond screens.

Why We Exist?

In today’s digital age, it’s easy to get swept away by our devices. But too much screen time drains our focus, energy, and even our happiness.

Empowering lives in a digital age, our foundation is dedicated to shedding light on the grip of smart devices and its profound effects on our bodies and minds.

What We Do?

Through group and individual workshops, seminars, and coaching sessions, we help individuals rediscover the lost treasures of time, focus, and vitality.

Our work helps people rediscover the joys of real-life connections, hobbies, and moments of mindfulness.

Join us as we embark on a transformational quest to harmonize the digital realm with the real world.

Together, we can achieve a life where technology enriches rather than engulfs, where every moment counts, and where the path to fulfillment is illuminated by a balanced relationship with our devices.

While the phones were wired, we were free. Since the phones became wireless,
we are handcuffed to them.

She has a passion for helping people achieve a healthy life-technology balance in our digital world.

Since 2013, she has been studying the impact of Wireless Mobile Device (WMD) addiction, uncovering fascinating patterns in how we interact with our devices.

These insights have become the bedrock of the Phreedom Foundation, guiding our mission to help people reclaim control over their digital lives.

Discover Life-Technology Balance

In today’s world, it’s unrealistic to live without our wireless mobile devices (WMDs). But what we can do is take a closer look at how we interact with them—and make changes if needed.

At Phreedom Foundation, we focus on practical, small adjustments that can bring ‘life-technology balance’ into everyday situations—whether at home, at work, or even on vacation.

The key is consistency: small changes, done regularly, can transform into lasting habits.

And yes, we’re intentional about putting ‘life’ first in ‘Life-Technology Balance’—because that’s what truly matters!

Balance is finding time for what you need to do and what you want to do.

Did you pass the Escape-Displace Detector?

ESCAPE

How often do we justify our device use with phrases like, “It helps me focus,” “It calms me down,” or “It keeps me on track”? But is that really true?

In reality, many of us turn to our devices to ‘escape’ from situations that feel boring, physically demanding, or mentally and emotionally challenging?

Think back to the last time you had to choose between preparing a presentation or scrolling through social media. Which one won out?

Did you choose to ‘escape’ from the task, telling yourself it would be “just for a bit,” only to lose the motivation to get back to it?

Did your device play a role in that?

DISPLACE

With only so many hours in a day, screen time can quietly ‘displace’ important activities like exercising, getting enough sleep, or staying on top of schoolwork.

Research shows that excessive screen time often displaces activities that keep us healthy and productive.

At Phreedom Foundation, we help people recognize this subconscious ‘Escape-Displace’ habit and guide them toward transforming it into an ‘Engage-Replace’ mindset!

The issue is not how much time is spent on the devices, but what else should have happened during that time that the devices facilitated to escape-displace.

Ready to Engage-Replace?

ENGAGE

The next time you reach for your WMD (wireless mobile device), take a moment to pause. Ask yourself, “Am I grabbing my device to ‘ESCAPE-DISPLACE’ a task that feels boring or challenging?”

“Am I just procrastinating?”

If the answer is ‘Yes,’ stop the automatic response of reaching for your device. Instead, free yourself from any self-judgment, give yourself credit for noticing the habit, and choose to actively ENGAGE with the task or person in front of you.

REPLACE

At Phreedom Foundation , we’re here to help you REPLACE the essential activities that might have been displaced by your WMDs.

Our bond with our devices is strong, so breaking free requires an approach that’s equally strong and intentional.

With the right strategies, you can reconnect with what truly matters and create a healthier, more balanced life.

The issue is not the medium (device) itself, but the content (social media, gaming, shopping, etc.) that we access on the medium.

Break the Habit-Loop

  • Dopamine is one of the chemicals that is released in the brain in response to a reward-related cue. Every ding or chime from the wireless mobile device (WMD) is a cue for the release of dopamine.
  • Dopamine is addictive and makes us ‘want’ to check again and again.
  • The cue (ding from device) leads to craving (dopamine release) that makes one respond (reach for the device) to find the reward (a new message/social media update).
  • Over time, the ‘satisfaction’ of the reward becomes associated with the ding.
  • Finally, the anticipation of the reward becomes stronger than the reward itself and makes us check the WMD even if there is no ding!
  • The goal of Phreedom Foundationis to achieve Life-Technology balance by weakening the ‘habit loop’ of cue craving response reward.

Technology is meant to work FOR human beings, not the other way around. "

What Action Can I Take?

The first step to solving any problem is recognizing that it exists.

Start by taking our self-assessment questionnaires to see if it’s time to rethink your relationship with your devices.

From there, explore a variety of resources designed to help you take the first steps toward Life-Technology Balance. Whether it’s setting boundaries, finding healthier habits, or learning mindful tech use, we’re here to guide you on your journey.

How do WMDs affect Health?

Wireless Mobile Devices (WMDs) can quietly push aside essential activities in our lives. The constant pull of notifications and the endless stream of novelty make them hard to resist!

We start procrastinating on things like exercise, sleep, and work.

Our focus takes a hit because a part of our brain stays distracted, always ready to be interrupted.

This can lead to a constant sense of anxiety, unease, and the nagging feeling that something’s left undone—or worse, that we’re missing out on something important!
